Why is Gloria supporting SignHealth?
'Looking back on what happened to me and Ian, it's really painful.
I don't want anyone to have to go through what we went through; it was awful. But that to aside, I wish all the medical staff within the NHS, everyone, has access to deaf awareness training.
They need to understand that we need to communicate and meet our needs. Because the deaf community is not all the same, some might want to lip read, some might want BSL.
The NHS should know through this training so they are prepared before they work in a hospital, which makes it easier for everyone to access and makes it feel friendly and warm. I know the NHS has its problems, but the deaf community is the worst off when it comes to accessing information.
And I hope in the future, if all these things happen, they will treat us as equals' - Gloria
